Ruffed Grouse

ruffed grouse image
The ruffed grouse is a common inhabitant throughout the forested regions of Ontario. In the spring, wood lots come alive with the unique drumming sounds made by the male grouse as they attempt to attract mates. When alarmed, these ground dwelling birds may choose to freeze and disappear against the forest floor or they may burst into flight. An explosion of noisy wings and a fast take off is ideal for both startling and escaping potential enemies.
